1156 CE - Isle of Man
by Ronald MacGordon
Some Manx chiefs persuade Somerled in Argyll to come to their assistance. Godred is defeated in a naval battle off Colonsay and Somerled takes the center group of the Hebredies, including Mull and Islay. Godred retains the northern isles, such as Lewis and Skye, as well as Man. He puts himself under the protection of Henry II of England, although it is unclear the exact nature.
In 1158, a quarrell again arises and Somerled drives Godred from Man, plundering it. Somerled retained control in some fashion until his death in Scotland in 1164.
