1093-1098 CE, Magnus Barfod exerts control over Isle of Man
by Ronald MacGordon
Magnus Barfod (Barefoot, so called because of wearing a kilt) of Norway begins to exert closer control over this area. Conflict among the sons of Crovan, with Lagman, the eldest, blinding his younger brother Harald, for rebelling against him and then resigning the throne in repentance for this act. He left the throne in the custody of Murchadh O'Brian, King of Dublin, until his youngest brother, Olaf could rule. The man appointed by O'Brian to act in his behalf, possibly one Donald, son of Teige, was so oppressive the chiefs rose against him and he was expelled. All this was for the Kingdom of Sudreys in general, of which the Isle of Man was a relatively minor part and took no major role.
